Iluzjon

A Celebration of Polish Cinema & Poster Design at 18 Hewett Street
19-29 October 2012

Iluzjon

Press release:

"Iluzjon is an exhibition that showcases the very best of Polish film and theatre posters from the 1960s and 1970s, collected by Eye Sea Posters. These posters were commissioned by state controlled film and theatre institutions during the communist era in Poland, in order to create alternative imagery to the foreign originals they deemed inappropriate to use as advertising. Often they had little visual reference to the film itself when creating the alternatives, resulting in off the wall and seemingly unrelated imagery. It provided an opportunity for some of the most revered national artists of the time to showcase their skills in conceptual design. Polish poster design has since gained international acclaim for its distinctive graphic style - bold, colourful, surreal and often with a satirical sense of humour or subversive theme. This makes them highly collectable and increasingly sought after."

Zlot Mlodziezy Polskiej from Eye Sea Posters

"Rare examples will be on display, and for sale, by renowned designers including: Wiktor Gorka, Waldemar Swierzy, Franciszek Starowieyski, Andrzej Krajewski, Jerzy Flisak, Maria Ihnatowicz, Jan Mlodozeniec and more. There will also be an limited edition screen print designed exclusively for the exhibition by Scot from design studio La Boca, who is an enthusiast of the genre. There will also be a series of events to coincide with the exhibition that highlight Polish culture and contribution to design and film. London based artist and curator, Stanley Schtinter, has organised an impressive array of film related events that often involve the screening of previously unreleased and forgotten cinema gems and soundtrack music nights. He will be curating an evening dedicated to Polish cinema, allowing for a unique opportunity to watch on a big screen carefully selected and incredibly rare films. Protein will also be hosting a Forum event that explores the history and influence of Polish poster and graphic design. There will also be a pop up vodka bar with crafted cocktails utilising arguably Poland's most notable export."

The private view for Iluzjon will take place on the 18th October from 7-10pm. Please join us for refreshments and DJs playing the best in Soundtrack Music. Please rsvp to rsvp@protein.co.uk

Piramida

Piramida (meaning "the pyramid") is the name of a small Russian town in Spitsbergen. It's also the upcoming album from Efterklang... featuring some nice artwork by Danish design studio Hvass&Hannibal:

Efterklang – Piramida

Efterklang – Piramida

The band spent nine days in the ghost town of Piramida (the mining settlement was abruptly abandoned in January 1998), recording sound samples which they’ve pieced together for their new album.

The video for Hollow Mountain (loving the reference to the empty mine!), created and directed by Jakob Steen and Christoffer Frandsen, mixes photos the band took while on their trip with elements created by Hvass&Hannibal:

Came across these great illustrations on tumblr, couldn't find any more information (on the interweb) on them other than they appear to be from an exhibition of "50 years of Soviet Science and Technology. KGM, Budapest, 1967":

The Third Reich Trilogy

Great set of covers by Stefanie Posavec - the designer behind the MyFry iPhone app - for the box set of Richard J. Evans' trilogy of history books that charted the downfall of the Third Reich (published by Penguin):

The Third Reich Trilogy designed by Stefanie Posavec

"Designing a series of books that looked beautiful but were still sensitive to the topic was a challenge. The books reference the style of German book design from the time period and in their patterns present stylised themes found within each book in the trilogy. As the story moved towards war, the designs became more hard-edged. Yes, an unusual topic to work with but I'm still pleased with the outcome." – Stefanie Posavec
