Esoteric Geometries
Technically precise pencil drawings by artist Louise Despont.
"When I started working with architectural tools and geometrics it felt like I had discovered an abstract language of symbols..." she says. "The early drawings were simple symmetries and forms. I was interested in creating harmonic relationships between the two sides of the page. Eventually the drawings became more complex and began to echo structures, then organic forms."

Black Sun and Inverted Starfield
Today's amazing Astronomy Picture of the Day:
Worth seeing big here.
Image Credit & Copyright: Jim Lafferty
Explanation: Does this strange dark ball look somehow familiar? If so, that might be because it is our Sun. In the above image, a detailed solar view was captured originally in a very specific color of red light, then rendered in black and white, and then color inverted. Once complete, the resulting image was added to a starfield, then also color inverted.

Flying Saucer Monochromes
Paintings by Vancouver artist Neil Wedman: "No, I don't believe in UFOs but I've always been attracted to the fantastic images peculiar to certain superstitions and beliefs, particularly more modern, quasi-scientific notions like Spiritualism, seances and spirit photography and flying saucers."

Fathom and Fray
Caleb Charland turns lab studies into visions, creating wondrous photographic images from ordinary household phenomena:
“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.”
-Albert Einstein

Radiating
“Wrinkles in a thin film radiating from a drop of water: The thickness and elasticity of the film can be determined from the number and length of the wrinkles.”

Imagined Galaxies
Intricate drawings by Brooklyn-based artist Marsha Cottrell:
She told Review Interview earlier this year: "The first landscape images in art I connected with as a young person were da Vinci’s “deluge” drawings. I was attracted to the idea that they were not representations of actual places, but eternal/internal landscapes that might be found anywhere at any moment in time. Their energy, architecture, and intricacy—but not rigidity—always appealed to me. They seemed to present an open platform with which to interact, and I’ve always aspired for my own work operate in a similar way."

Celestial Nights
"In Celestial Nights, photographer Neil Folberg skillfully captures a spectacular world of nocturnal landscapes where the horizon isn’t always definitive. The earth and heavens are mingled in this collection of arresting photographs, which to Folberg represent a blurred division between present and eternity, substance and spirit, and knowledge and imagination."
As Folberg writes, “No one can draw that line with precision, for we exist in all of these worlds at once.”

Iluzjon
A Celebration of Polish Cinema & Poster Design at 18 Hewett Street
19-29 October 2012
Press release:
"Iluzjon is an exhibition that showcases the very best of Polish film and theatre posters from the 1960s and 1970s, collected by Eye Sea Posters. These posters were commissioned by state controlled film and theatre institutions during the communist era in Poland, in order to create alternative imagery to the foreign originals they deemed inappropriate to use as advertising. Often they had little visual reference to the film itself when creating the alternatives, resulting in off the wall and seemingly unrelated imagery. It provided an opportunity for some of the most revered national artists of the time to showcase their skills in conceptual design. Polish poster design has since gained international acclaim for its distinctive graphic style - bold, colourful, surreal and often with a satirical sense of humour or subversive theme. This makes them highly collectable and increasingly sought after."
"Rare examples will be on display, and for sale, by renowned designers including: Wiktor Gorka, Waldemar Swierzy, Franciszek Starowieyski, Andrzej Krajewski, Jerzy Flisak, Maria Ihnatowicz, Jan Mlodozeniec and more. There will also be an limited edition screen print designed exclusively for the exhibition by Scot from design studio La Boca, who is an enthusiast of the genre. There will also be a series of events to coincide with the exhibition that highlight Polish culture and contribution to design and film. London based artist and curator, Stanley Schtinter, has organised an impressive array of film related events that often involve the screening of previously unreleased and forgotten cinema gems and soundtrack music nights. He will be curating an evening dedicated to Polish cinema, allowing for a unique opportunity to watch on a big screen carefully selected and incredibly rare films. Protein will also be hosting a Forum event that explores the history and influence of Polish poster and graphic design. There will also be a pop up vodka bar with crafted cocktails utilising arguably Poland's most notable export."
The private view for Iluzjon will take place on the 18th October from 7-10pm. Please join us for refreshments and DJs playing the best in Soundtrack Music. Please rsvp to rsvp@protein.co.uk
